Common Drywall Issues and How to Fix Them

January 11, 2024 by jmutschler

Have you ever seen a professional carpenter or drywall installer work their magic? They make patching a hole or hiding seams look so easy! But when you attempt to fix things yourself, you end up with bumps, cracks, and an uneven surface. Drywall is a very versatile material, but it can be challenging to work with.

And while it may seem like an easy fix, there are a few common issues that can pop up when installing or repairing drywall. We’re here to discuss these problems, why they occur, and how you can fix them like a pro.

Cracks

One of the most common issues with drywall is cracking. Cracks can happen due to settling, seasonal changes, or even improper installation techniques. The best way to fix them is to cover them up. Start by scoring the crack with a utility knife, making it deeper and wider. Then, clean the area and apply a self-adhesive mesh tape over the crack. Finally, use the joint compound over the tape, feathering it out to blend it with the surrounding surface. Let it dry, and then sand the area smooth.

Bumps

Bumps are usually the result of the screw or nail that was not inserted far enough into the drywall. To fix this issue, start by removing the screw or nail from the bump. Then, using a drywall saw or knife, cut the drywall paper around the bump, creating a small square. Remove any loose debris or drywall chunks. Using a new piece of drywall, measure and cut a new square to fit the space you created earlier. Attach the new square to the studs using screws or nails, and then add a joint compound. Once the compound has dried, you can sand it smooth, prime, and paint it.

Water Damage

The most severe drywall issue you may face is water damage. Water damage is unsightly and can be a health hazard. It is essential to address the issue to prevent mold growth and further damage to your property.

Determine the extent of the damage and make sure to fix the problem that caused the water damage. Cut the affected area until you reach the drywall that is still in good condition, and remove any damaged material. Allow the area to dry, then apply a sealer or a primer to prevent any growth of mold or mildew. After that, follow the steps mentioned above to patch over the area.

However, it’s always a good idea to get a professional opinion on significant water damage!
